End-of-Year Mind Muck Out: Clear Your Mental Stable for 2025

Riding at Hickstead

As we gallop toward the end of the year, it’s natural to feel the weight of 2024—its challenges, triumphs, and the mental clutter that can accumulate along the way. Much like mucking out a stable to ensure it’s clean and ready for a fresh start, now is the perfect time for a good mind muck out!

1. Unpacking the Year: What’s in Your Stable?
Start by taking stock of the year. This isn’t about judgment—it’s about awareness. Ask yourself:
– What moments stood out as victories (big or small)?
– What challenges felt like stumbling blocks?
– What habits served me well, and which ones held me back?

Interactive Exercise:
Grab a notebook or journal and divide the page into three columns:
1. Achievements: Write down what went well.
2. Lessons Learned: Note areas for growth.
3. Unwanted Baggage: Identify thoughts, habits, or experiences you want to leave behind.

Or maybe – The Good, The Bad and The Ugly are good titles? Think of this as grooming your horse—you’re identifying the really muddy patches to remove and the shiny coat beneath to celebrate.

2. Rekindle Your Motivation: Why Did You Saddle Up in the First Place?
Motivation can ebb and flow, but revisiting your “why” is a great way to reconnect with your goals. Ask yourself:

– What inspired me at the start of the year?
– How have my priorities evolved?
– What am I excited about for 2025?

In the book, Atomic Habits,  it emphasises the importance of focusing on identity rather than outcomes. Instead of saying, “I want to be more organised,” try reframing it as, “I’m someone who values clarity and simplicity.”

3. Refining Your Routine: Small Changes, Big Impact
You wouldn’t overhaul your horse’s training plan overnight, and the same applies to building better habits. Clear’s idea of “habit stacking” is a brilliant way to incorporate positive changes without overwhelming yourself.

Actionable Steps:
– Pair a new habit with an existing routine. For example:
– While making your morning coffee, take the time the kettle takes to to boil to do some squats or just to visualise your goals.
– After mucking out the stable, jot down one thing you’re grateful for.
– Focus on small, achievable wins. If your goal is to exercise more, start with just 5 minutes a day.

Remember, every stride counts, no matter how small. Small steps are far more manageable and tend to be something we don’t dread doing….
